Mosaics -a meditative way to spend time

Broken plates, cups, saucers, tiles, cracked precious vases. These pieces are passed on by friends.

"Can you make a mosaic with this?" they ask. They know that in this place their beloved teapot, tile remnants or cracked plate could be reincarnated.

It doesn't matter if the piece is curved or has broken in a strange way. The urge to form patterns is alive in this makeshift studio.

When Gerard Butera was 29 he was diagnosed with cancer during a lucky encounter. "It was kind of weird, I was moving house and I had the flu. I went to the doctor to get some antibiotics and there was this new doctor. He said 'while you're here, we may as well do a physical examination'. He found a lump on my testicle and sent me for an ultrasound. That night, I heard a knock at the door and I knew something was wrong. It was the doctor."

The Victorian Lifestyle and Neighbourhood Environment Study VicLANES) is internationally significant research involving 4,913 participants in 50 small areas in Melbourne. VicLANES examines the importance of area socio-economic status (SES), neighbourhood environments, individual perceptions, attitudes and knowledge in relation to three important health behaviours:

  • food purchasing for household consumption

  • physical activity

  • alcohol consumption.

Next year we will see major changes to how we handle waste and single-use plastics in Victoria.

First, a Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) will be launched – allowing people to get 10c for returning drink cans, bottles and cartons to local deposit locations points. The Scheme will be funded by beverage suppliers, and when an item is donated, you can choose whether to keep the funds or donate money to a nominated group. read more
